Back from the 2007 O'Reilly Open Source Convention
The infamous Adam Trachtenberg spent last week in Portland, OR attending OSCON, the O'Reilly Open Source Convention. Here's a slice:

"Fellow eBay employee Rolf Skyberg gave a talk on Applying Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to Technology...As a new twist, Rolf passed around a giant plastic tub of Bazooka Joe bubble gum. You'll need to attend his talk to understand the reason why a product that combines mediocre gum with a mediocre comic strip can somehow manage to stay in business for over 50 years.." Read more >

Developer Forums Thread of Every Other Week
Recently in the eBay Trading Web Services forum, developers jag4s, 6460carole and steve321 posted about their experience with the REST-XSLT transform tool and options for its future: "I still don't understand why a discussion of this importance is still happening in such a quiet corner. A better platform could perhaps be the eBay Developer Program News email that you send out."

We are looking into different options and plans with regard to the XSLT tool and the functionality that it offers. For anyone who has not read this post, please add your comments on how you use the tool, if you're an affiliate/buy-side developer, what level of importance it is to your business, and what (if any) options you have for a replacement. eBay and Widgets in BusinessWeek
"EBay now has a host of widgets, created by both eBay's own people and by third-party developers, that enable users to shop for items on eBay from their own personal Web page. "Now is the time to deliver eBay off of eBay," says Mancini. "What we want to do is engage buyers when they happen to be at some other Web site."

Catherine Holahan, Spencer Ante, and Heather Green from BusinessWeek recently wrote this article about the "the Web's next revolution"--widgets. If you want to participate in this revolution, check out the eBay Shopping API--optimized for just this kind of application. read article >
The Power Behind the Platform
"When we introduced our online auction service a decade ago, there was no database, infrastructure, or storage system, and we could handle only 50,000 active items for sale. You can imagine the number of changes that have occurred to take our legacy platform from that level to a system that supports 100 million active listings at any given time, processing more than 588 million new listings in the first quarter of this year."

James Barrese, eBay's VP of systems and architecture, wrote this article for InformationWeek about the evolution of eBay's infrastructure. read article >
