We heard your feedback! New View Item Page to keep "flex" design

At eBay Live we announced that we would be updating the View Item page to improve the buyer experience. Sellers and developer have spoken, and we're listening.

Good news! As a result of your feedback, we have decided to stay with the existing "flex" design and not constrain the description area to 710 pixels. You can continue to make your template as wide as you want, and the page will resize to fit it.

Note that although you are able to make your template as wide as you want to, you may find  these best practices useful:

  1. A smaller design (~800 pixels wide) allows your page to be seen properly by more users. Someone viewing your page at an 800x600 resolution (yes , approximately 10-15% of our users still use this resolution!) might still have horizontal scrollbars in their browser, even if the page itself doesn't have horizontal scrollbars. It's your  choice whether you want to support the smaller resolutions or not.
  2. Due to a security feature we are implementing called "domain split" (if you remember, we launched this on our Motors site early this year), we recommend including a specific pixel width and height to the description/templates, instead of just setting them to "100%." This is because, the 100% setting interferes with the domain split code, and might cause some unexpected white spaces and scrollbars in the description.

We are continuing to study how buyers use the new View Item page. To check it out and learn more about the new design, visit this page: http://pages.ebay.com/newitempage/.

Video Interview with 2008 eBay Star Developer Award Winner Z-Firm

"Z-Firm is a member of over 20 developer programs -- and yours is by far the best."

-- Rafael Zimberoff of Z-Firm, on how the eBay Developers Program stacks up against other developers programs and other Web platforms

Rafael sat down with us at this year's eBay Developers Conference in Chicago to talk about what it's like being a rockstar - a DSR Rockstar. It may sound like the next spinoff of Guitar Hero, but his application, ShipRush, was the 2008 eBay Star Developer Award winner in our DSR Rockstar category for improving the customer experience on eBay around Detailed Seller Ratings.

Reminder: REST API will no longer be supported as of August 1, 2008

As previously announced, the token-based REST API is being deprecated and will no longer be supported as of August 1, 2008. Please use Shopping API Get HTTP protocol for your development.

As of March, making REST calls has become easier with the Shopping API. You no longer need a token to make HTTP Get (REST) calls!

To help migrating your application to Shopping API calls if you still using a token-based REST API call, see the eBay REST API Guide for a table showing the comparable Shopping API calls. Also see the field by field mapping from GetSearchResults to FindItemsAdvanced (in Shopping API).

For technical questions about migrating from the REST API to Shopping API, you can post questions in our Shopping and Merchandising API Forum, or fill out a Support Request for a more immediate response using our premium technical support channel.

New Requirement: Specify Handling Time and Return Policy in your Listings

Starting in October, handling time and return policy will become required fields for listings.

When a buyer has a sub-standard shopping experience, the root cause is often the gap between buyer expectations and their actual experience. It's a lose-lose situation, where the buyer is unhappy, and the seller ends up getting a low Detailed Seller Rating.

We're working to solve this problem by bridging this expectations gap. Requiring handling time and return policy allows us to set the correct expectations up front for delivery estimates and return policy. It's a win for buyers, and in turn, a win for sellers, who will benefit from better buyer perception.

What's changing with this project?

  • Two previously optional listing fields will become required: handling time and return policy.
  • One new listing field under return policy (Who Pays for Return Shipping) will be created and required.

Handling Time Developer Impact

Return Policy Developer Impact

We realize that many sellers offer return policy details in the item description.  When return policy becomes mandatory, sellers should ensure that the return policy they select matches the policy outlined in the item description.

In order to ease you into this change, we'll be making the API changes, and handling time and return policy will move inline in the selling flows in September. In October, handling time and return policy will become required fields.

Update 30 Jun 2008: Also see this blog post for a clarification of the Return Policy requirement.

Update on the Return Policy Requirement

As previously mentioned, in October handling time and return policy will become required for listings. We've since had some questions about the return policy requirement.

The requirement is to clearly specify a return policy, but this can include the option "No returns accepted." In other words, sellers are not required to accept returns. They just need to make their policy clear, and they need to specify it in a predictable way. That's why we are requiring all sellers to use the same return policy fields as of October.

The requirement to specify a return policy goes into effect in October for all sellers, regardless of the API version you pass in your request.

We realize that using the Attributes API makes return policies complex to adopt. Therefore, in early September we'll release a new ReturnPolicy node with named fields and codetypes (enums). (Applications that use a lower request version can use AttributeSetArray or the new ReturnPolicy node.)

We'll also provide information about how to migrate from using attribute IDs to the new ReturnPolicy fields.

Please keep an eye on the blog for a preview of the new return policy schema.

Requiring Specified Shipping Enforced on ES and DE

As mentioned in March and May, eBay is requiring that sellers specify at least one domestic shipping service when listing an item. This increases both buyer satisfaction rates, and DSR scores.

This policy is now being enforced on the Spain (ES) and Germany (DE) sites. Read the German shipping announcement. This policy will be enforced on the US site at the end of July.
